Decade long wait for Park and Ride at Shieldmuir nears its end

The decade long wait for a park- and-ride facility at Shieldmuir Train Station is almost over.

In a letter to Motherwell South East and Ravenscraig Councillor Nathan Wilson, Taylor Wimpey has confirmed that works to complete the long-awaited park and ride on the land at Shieldmuir are progressing well and in line with the developer’s expectations.

The firm’s contractor has now carried out challenging trackside works and completed the installation of the cables for the new lighting and CCTV.

The final road surfacing will conclude by the end of August and the vast majority of the works to create the park and ride are expected to have been completed in early September.

Soft landscaping works will commence in October and Taylor Wimpey are engaging with Network Rail in relation to the official handover process for maintenance of the facility.

Following a more than ten-year delay to the project, construction of the park and ride finally started in March but was postponed in response to the coronavirus national emergency before work was able to resume in June.

Councillor Wilson said: “It’s great news that construction of the park and ride is going according to plan and is moving closer to the finishing line.

“I have been down to have a look at the site in person and it’s hugely encouraging to see the progress that has been made since the project re-commenced in June.

“Taylor Wimpey has confirmed with me directly that they anticipate most of the works to create the car park will have been carried out by the early part of September.

“The project has experienced many setbacks over the previous decade and this has proved to be a source of considerable disappointment and frustration for local people who have been resolute in their support of a park and ride.

“It’s fantastic that the long wait for a park and ride is almost over and alongside residents, I look forward to its completion.”
