Go the distance to help fight heart disease

Make your mark in the fight for every heartbeat and become a British Heart Foundation (BHF) Heart Runner.

Entries are now open for the Edinburgh Marathon Festival which is taking place on May 29.

Join 5,000 Heart Runners who join the Heart Runners team each year and fight back against heart and circulatory disease, which is responsible for more than a quarter of all deaths in Scotland. Last year, those who secured a BHF Charity Place helped raise nearly £3 million for the BHF’s essential, life saving research, which is improving the lives of those affected by heart disease every day.

The popular event gives Heart Runners a unique opportunity to take in some of the best sights around Edinburgh, from the historic Holyrood Palace, home to Scottish Kings and Queens, to the Portobello Promenade for some bracing seaside air. Primarily flat, the course is suitable for both first-timers and seasoned marathon runners.

Jacqulyn Bell, Heart Runners project manager at the BHF, said: “We’re really looking forward to this year’s Edinburgh Half Marathon and Marathon and hope to see many enthusiastic people willing to take on the challenge at our charity village, where we will be offering treats and free sport massages.

“Coronary heart disease remains the single biggest killer in Scotland. It is responsible for over 6,800 deaths in Scotland each year, around 600 in Edinburgh alone, so we urgently need the people of Edinburgh to support us in our search for the breakthrough.

“Becoming a Heart Runner is the perfect way to support the nation’s heart charity, save lives and improve your own heart health at the same time. We want to see women, men, families and friends come together to help us put an end to suffering caused by the nation’s single biggest killer.”
