Newarthill actress Elaine C Smith is one of 16 inspiring Scots chosen to be featured in a new exhibition in New York next month.

‘Brush with Inspiration’ by Glasgow artist Gerard M Burns is being held as part of the annual Scotland Week celebrations at the Glasgow Caledonian University campus in New York.

Gerard selected Scots he felt had an American profile and the exhibition also features the likes of First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, composer Craig Armstrong, comedian Billy Connolly and actor Ewan McGregor.

Proceeds from sales or donations for the paintings will go to The Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice fundraising for their new hospice in Bellahouston in Glasgow.

Gerard said: “It’s extremely nerve wracking to be presented with an image of yourself so I am always apprehensive to see what the reaction is going to be.”

The exhibition builds on the success of his ‘14 for 14’ exhibition which was launched during the XX Commonwealth Games in Glasgow last year.

Meanwhile, Elaine can be seen on STV every Monday on the new documentary Burdz Eye View which follows her first stand up tour in ten years.

From Stonehaven to St Andrews, and North Berwick to Portpatrick, Elaine travels to places she has never toured before, providing a colourful narrative as she meets the people of Scotland.

Elaine said: “Making Burdz Eye View was a great opportunity to perform my one woman show in magical places from my childhood and also in locations I have never had a chance to experience before.

“It was a real privilege to meet so many amazing people, especially the women who work and live in these iconic towns.

“It offered me a fresh perspective on how lucky I am to live in such a beautiful and diverse country. I hope the audiences enjoy going on holiday with me.”

Elizabeth Partyka, deputy director of channels at STV, said: “This new series offers an insight into Elaine’s first stand up tour in ten years and a chance to meet some great local characters, plus some well known faces.

“Elaine C Smith is a great narrator and comedian so viewers are in for a treat as she takes them on her own unique tour of Scotland.”
