A young programmer is selected to participate in a breakthrough experiment in artificial intelligence in Ex Machina, released on Friday at the Showcase in Bargeddie.

Caleb (Domnhall Gleeson), a 24-year-old coder at the world’s largest internet company, wins a competition to spend a week at a private mountain retreat belonging to Nathan (Oscar Isaac), the reclusive CEO of the company.

But when Caleb arrives at the remote location he finds that he will have to participate in a strange and fascinating experiment in which he must interact with the world’s first true artificial intelligence, housed in the body of a beautiful robot girl.

It is written and directed by Alex Garland, marking his directorial debut, having previously written the screenplays for Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later and Sunshine.

Ex Machina is rated 15 and runs 108 minutes.
