’Well face Inverness test on opening day

Motherwell will kick off the new season at home to Inverness Caledonian Thistle on Saturday, July 23.

The Fir Parkers pipped the Highlanders, managed by former ’Well boss Terry Butcher, to a top six place last season, but haven’t won a head-to-head between the sides on home turf since September 2009.

Stuart McCall’s men travel to Kilmarnock a week later before welcoming Hearts on Sunday, August 7, and visiting St Mirren on Saturday, August 13.

Other key fixtures include a trip to Tynecastle on Christmas Eve and a visit to Ibrox on January 2. The last game before the split will see ’Well travel to Easter Road on Saturday, April 7.

The team return to training on Monday, giving McCall and assistant Kenny Black their first pre-season with the squad after taking over midway through last season.

They have a friendly against Dumbarton at Strathclyde Homes Stadium on Saturday, July 9.

The match was agreed as part of the deal which took young full back Nicky Devlin from Sons to Fir Park.

There are likely to be trialists at training, including former Manchester City winger Karl Moore and Partick Thistle wideman Chris Erskine,

They have both been linked with a move to Fir Park as McCall tries to sort out the problem position on the left hand side of midfield.
