Thorniewood’s bid to land a semi-final place in the Euroscot Engineering Sectional League Cup was ended by Port Glasgow in their quarter-final at Robertson Park on Wednesday night.

The Viewpark side topped their qualifying section for the first time in many years to make it through to the last eight.

And a home tie against Central League Division 2 outfit Port Glasgow - the lowest ranked club left in the competition - was their reward.

But defensive errorrs cost them dear as the visitors won 3-1 to book their spot in the last four.

The league season kicks off on Saturday when Thorniewood travel to Yoker Athletic for their opening fixture.

Bellshill Athletic begin their Central League Division 1 campaign with an away match at Maryhill.

Athletic, who finished in third place in their League Cup section behind Thorniewood, strengthened their squad last week when they signed St Anthony’s striker Jason McKay, player of the year with the Glasgow club last season.

Both Saturday’s games kick off at 2pm.
