MOTHERWELL are out of this season’s Scottish Cup after defeat to Aberdeen in a replay at Fir Park on Tuesday.
On a freezing cold night it was the home side who froze and despite Michael Higdon’s 12th goal of the season, were left to rue allowing the Dons a last minute equaliser in the original tie.
Darren Randolph returned in goal for ’Well after his two-game ban and was called into action after two minutes when Clark Robertson met Jonny Hayes’s corner.
The only other change was Stuart Carswell replacing Nicky Law after the midfielder failed to shake off an ankle injury picked up against Ross County on Saturday.
The hosts quickly of proceedings and passed the ball about well, however the closest they came to scoring was Higdon heading over a Chris Humphrey cross.
Aberdeen could be dangerous on the break and as half-time neared Randolph pulled off a good block to deny Rory Fallon’s strong header from Robertson’s cross.
Six minutes into the second half and FALLON was set up by Joe Shaughnessy 15 yards out and the New Zealander fired past Randolph.
Former ’Well defender Mark Reynolds pulled off a brilliant tackle in the six yard box, to deny Higdon an equaliser, but it was at the other end the real changes with both Niall McGinn and Fallon going close.
On 61 minutes it was 2-0 as this time Fallon returned the favour crossing for SHAUGHNESSY to tap in at the back post.
In injury time ‘Well pulled one back as Robertson handled in the box and Higdon stepped up to grab what amounted to little more than a consolation.
