Members of Fighting Scots Gym in Mossend are braving the winter in order to have improved facilities come the better weather.

The gym is based on the site of the former Bellshill and Mossend Bowling Club and is determined to upgrade the old greens to a decent standard.

Gym owner Frank Gilluley said: “At the weekend we were demolishing the wall that separates the two greens and filling in the gap.

“This weekend we are aiming to returf the area and roll it flat in order to provide a much better surface.

“Obviously they were bowling greens, and while they haven’t been used as such for a long time it shouldn’t take too much to return them to something of their former glory.

“By doing it at this time of year, it will allow the new turf the chance to bed in and be ready for when the better weather comes.

“We have football teams who use the gym to train, so improving the quality of the grass means they’ll be able to be outdoors as well.

“We are just funding it from the club at the moment, hopefully in the longer term we can get a grant to put down Astroturf, but this will do us for the next few years.”

In addition the gym has replaced all 242 metres of slabs around the greens, introduced a new sports therapy facility and membership continues to grow.

Frank said: “We continue to think up different activities and improve the facilities to encourage everyone along.

“The gym membership is steadily rising, and we have members of all different ages, abilities and fitness levels, so we’re happy with how it’s going.”
