Members of the Lenbukai Karate Club based at the Ravenscraig regional sports complex had a double reason for celebration recently.

The club delivered spectacular success at their karate tournament held within their dojo at Ravenscraig.

That was followed by their last Kyu Grading of the year where over 30 students progressed to the next level in the sport.

The tournament saw over 120 competitors from across Scotland compete in the fourth tournament the club has run since 2012.

The tournament featured the two main elements of karate - kata (pattern based karate) and kumite (traditional fighting) - with the age of participants ranging from as young as five to upwards of 55 years old.

Lenbukai has a long standing history in the Motherwell and Wishaw area and over the past four years, the club’s senior instructors have worked endlessly to bring Lenbukai back to the forefront as one of the best Shotokan Karate clubs in the area.

Senior instructor David Murdoch (5th Dan) said: “Over the past four years, Lenbukai have re-established themselves within Ravenscraig after several years of moving from dojo to dojo.

“This had a major impact on our student numbers and people thought we had disappeared. That is certainly not the case and I will continue to work hard alongside my father Andy Snr, my brother Andy Jnr, all my instructors and the parents to make Lenbukai a success once again.

“As part of this rebirth, we have now run four successful tournaments in Ravenscraig where we have built a solid base for our club.

“We currently run classes twice a week and have a mixture of age groups from five to 60.

“It is our intention to open a children’s class in January 2015 to encourage some of the younger people in the area to participate in the sport and give us more time to concentrate on their specific needs.

“Plans are already in place to run another open championships next year.

“We are also attending a number of competitions in Scotland in the coming months and preparations will soon be underway for the next WKC World Championships in 2016.”

The club trains at Ravenscraig every Sunday and Wednesday from 6pm. To find out more go to www.lenbukaikarateclub.com or visit them on Facebook.

The club would like to thank sponsors AC Electrics, Brannock Decorators Ltd, Paterson’s Trophy Supplies and Graham Marshall & Son Ltd and all the volunteers and officials who helped make the tournament run so smoothly, as well as the competitors who took part.
