Motherwell boxer Iain Butcher lifted the WBO European flyweight title with a stunning first round knockout of Gabor Molnor.
Friday’s fight at Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility was scheduled for 10 rounds, but Butcher made it a short night with a devastating right hand that left the Hungarian slumped on the mat.
Although Molnor made it his feet, he turned away from referee Kenny Pringle indicating he had no wish to continue.
Butcher said: “I thought it was going to be a long night, but I saw he was walking onto my right side and I’m sensible enough to take advantage.
“I knew he was a big puncher because he has loads of knockouts, so the idea was not to make any mistakes and get caught with a stupid shot myself.
“I had a lot of stress on myself in the lead up to the fight with my girlfriend Ashley being due to give birth, so I was glad to get it finished quick.
“It is probably one of the best punches I have ever thrown, and after Liverpool I was delighted not to have to leave the decision in the hands of the judges this time. It made a statement that puts me right up there in the eyes of a world governing body.”
