Bothwell’s Kirsty Gilmour went out of last week’s Yonex French Superseries badminton event in Paris last week at the second round stage.
But the 21-year-old Glasgow 2012 silver medalist took comfort from pushing 2010 Commonwealth champion Saina Nehwal all the way before losing their 39-minute duel 21-19 21-16.
Gilmour has yet to take a set off the Indian star in four meetings, but made a good start in this one, turning a 5-2 deficit into a 7-5 advantage.
But that was the only time she was ahead as Nehwal responded to move clear at 10-7 and appear to take control at 14-10. But Gilmour was just a point behind at 16-15 and maintained the one-point gap right up to the final point.
In the second game Nehwal took charge and pulled away from 4-4 to complete victory.
