A Motherwell badminton champion has been rewarded with a £1,500 sponsorship grant from Wilkinson in Brandon Parade South.

Alex Dunn (15), a member of the Scottish National Badminton Squad, will use the sponsorship fund to help cover the cost of training, sports equipment and entering tournaments all over Scotland and beyond.

The donation was made as part of Wilko’s Local Stars initiative, which sponsors individuals from across the country who either have a special talent, are an inspiration to others or help in their local community.

The Dalziel High pupil is currently the number one under-16s and 17s player in Scotland, and is so far ahead of many others in his own age group he has even played in events for under-19s, reaching the semi-finals.

He was also selected to represent Scotland in the under-17 European Junior Championships in Turkey earlier this year.

Wilkinson store manager Paul Lester said: “It’s always really inspiring to hear about the amazing talent we have in Motherwell and the Local Stars fund shows that where there’s a Wilko, there’s a way to help them on their journey.

“Alex is a fantastic representative for our town and we hope the sponsorship money goes a long way towards helping him conquer Scotland, Europe and maybe even beyond with his badminton prowess!”

Alex, of Thomson Drive, added: “I’m incredibly grateful for the sponsorship fund from my local Wilkinson store and every penny will make a difference when it comes to helping me further my badminton career.

“My family and friends are always so supportive but it’s comforting to know I’ve got the backing of a local business as well.

“I only hope I can continue representing Motherwell at badminton and make local people proud.”
