Newarthill boxer Charlie Flynn heads to Scotstoun on Saturday as he continues his bid to win selection for this summer’s Commonwealth Games.
The British lightweight champion from the Glasgow Phoenix club has received a boost in his bid to compete at Glasgow 2014 after receiving sponsorship from PD Decorators.
The Larkhall firm was started by brothers David and Peter Ilgunas who have grown the company which now employs 20 staff and secured several contracts with national house builders.
They now want their success to help pave the way to glory for Flynn.
David said: “We’re happy to support a potential Commonwealth Games athlete, Charlie works tirelessly at his sport and is a fantastic example of what can be achieved through hard work and dedication.
“I watched him training at his gym in recently and his work rate is absolutely tremendous.”
The British lightweight champion, who fights out of the Glagow Phoenix club, was quick to explain the importance of this sponsorship.
Flynn said: “It’s great to get the support from PDI in the run up to the Games, it makes a big difference to be able to get the right gear for training and competitions which takes the pressure off and lets you focus on preparation.”
Having travelled the world taking part in the biggest competitions in the boxing calendar, Flynn finished his first major season with an impressive world ranking of 23.
His road to qualification for the Commonwealth Games will end at the Scottish championship finals in Glasgow’s Emirates Arena on March 28 and Flynn reckons he’s in pole position reach them.
He said: “I’ve got the semi-finals on Saturday in Scotstoun sports against a good Edinburgh boxer Lewis Paulin.
“I faced him two years ago and beat him in the finals of the Scottish, but expect he will be out for revenge.
“The Emirates is an amazing venue and when I win the semi I will be boxing in front of the Commonwealth Games selection committee and 5,000 screaming fans which will be awesome.”
