Well give Scotland green light for manager talks
MOTHERWELL Football Club has given manager Mark McGhee permission to talk to the SFA.
Owner John Boyle said he had held "constructive and amicable" talks with McGhee about the manager's future after the SFA approached the club asking for permission to interview McGhee for the post of Scotland manager.
Mr Boyle said: "Mark and I had a very constructive and amicable meeting. He is on a three-year contract with the club. He is happy here and is looking forward to the rest of the season at Fir Park. Obviously, we are very keen to keep him as the Motherwell manager and I have put a range of proposals to him.
"Understandably, he wants to hear what the SFA has to say but he has made it clear publicly and to the club that he would not want to let us down. In fairness to him, Motherwell has reluctantly agreed to give permission to the SFA to speak to him."
McGhee one of four candidates to succeed Alex McLeish along with Celtic's Tommy Burns, Southampton manager George Burley and former Rangers and Liverpool manager Graeme Souness.
Although favourite for the Scotland job before Christmas, the chances of McGhee leaving Fir Park at this point have lessened since the death of club captain Phil O'Donnell.
McGhee has won universal admiration for his leadership following the tragedy and insisted he will not walk away if he is still needed.
He said: "I would leave only with the consensus of everyone here. I would need them to give their support and say they want me to do this.
"If I'm needed here longer – at the very least until the end of the season – I'll be here. I won't walk out in a way that leaves any resentment."
