TELEVISION cameras will soon be rolling into Motherwell as Ravenscraig prepares to host an evening of sporting glamour.
The sports facility has been selected as one of the venues for the PartyCasino.com Premier League Snooker (PLS) tournament, with some of the sport’s top stars ‘cue-ing’ up to play.
Now entering its record-breaking 26th season, PLS is the world’s only major snooker tournament played to a league format.
This year’s tournament will feature 10 players taking part in matches across the UK, and will be shown live on Sky Sports.
The Ravenscraig event - on Thursday, September 22, from 7.30pm - will feature semi-final matches between World Champion and Wizard of Wishaw John Higgins and Neil Robertson, and Shaun Murphy and Ding Junhui.
Landing one of the events is a major coup for the area, with Ravenscraig the only Scottish date on the tournament’s fixture list.
The facility only opened around a year ago, and manager John Swanson is delighted to be attracting big names already.
He explained that bringing top events to the venue was one of his main priorities after taking up the post.
He said: “As the manager, what I did was invite people from events and promotions companies for tours around the facility.
“This included representatives from the world of darts, snooker, boxing, etc, and low and behold we got a Sky Sports snooker event.
“A lot of preparation goes on behind the scenes for an event as big as this, and Sky have been out looking at where they are going to put the TV cameras and at how the hall is going to be dressed.
“The hall itself can hold and audience around 700, which should make for a good atmosphere and a great night of snooker.”
Tickets for the Ravenscraig date cost £16 / £10 for concessions and can be bought by calling the facility on 01698 274600. For more information, visit www.nlleisure.co.uk.
