NEWARTHILL footballer Rhonda Jones has notched up 100 Scotland caps and insists she has no plans to retire just yet.

The 33-year-old played her 100th game against Poland in a 3-1 away victory.

She said: “It’s such a privledge to play just once for your country, never mind 100 times.

“I’ve been playing since I was a kid, and I won’t think about retiring until the wheels start falling off!”

Jones, a defender, joined Ayr United at 16. In 2000, she gained a scholarship at Florida Atlantic University and played for several teams before returning to Scotland in 2008 to join Hibs.

She currently plays for Celtic and would encourage local girls to take up the sport.

GROWING

She said: “When I was a kid women’s football wasn’t as popular, but now it is the fastest growing sport in the country and around the world.

“I played with the boys until eventually I found a women’s team.

“Football has taken me all over the world, to almost every country in fact.

“I have a degree in graphic design which I got for free as part of the football scholarship in America.

“Football can really take you places and keeps you fit and healthy. You just have to be organised to keep up with the training and fixtures!”

Jones has a busy schedule ahead, having been named in the Scotland squad for the Euro 2013 qualifiers against Israel and the Republic of Ireland on June 16 and 21 respectively.

She is also hoping to help Celtic finish in the top two as the first half of the women’s season comes to an end.
