Newarthill boxer goes for gold
NEWARTHILL Boxing Club's Callum Johnson is gunning for gold at the Commonwealth Federation Championships in India.
The light-heavyweight got a bye into the semi-finals where he beat Rodney Prosper (Mauritius) 7-2. and is now preparing for the final against Dinesh Kumar of the host country.
Two other boxers from local clubs missed out on the medals in Delhi.
Michael Roberts, of Forgewood ABC, won his opening 56kg bout but lost his quarter-final to a Sri Lankan opponent.
Jerviston ABC's Iain Butcher was also in action in India, making the step up to senior level after taking bronze at the European Youth Championships last year.
Competing at 49kg, the 17-year-old was up against Kenya's Peter Mungai who took the first round with three good shots. No scoring punches were landed in the second round, but in the final round Mungai won another point to end Butcher's hopes.
Making up a strong Lanarkshire contingent in the Scotland group who trained in Malta before flying to Delhi was Newarthill ABC's Stevie Newnes, one of the squad coaches.
