MOTHERWELL have signed defender Simon Ramsden on a one-year contact.

Ramsden (30) has been on trial at the club since returning to pre-season training in late June and has impressed in his three weeks at Fir Park.

That prompted ‘Well boss Stuart McCall to sign the free agent for the second time, having left former club Bradford City during the summer.

Ramsden began his professional career with Sunderland before leaving the Black Cats in 2004 and enjoyed spells Grimsby, Rochdale before linking up with McCall who was then the manager a year at Valley Parade.

Despite spending much of his career as a right full-back, Ramsden is equally comfortable at centre back or in a holding midfield role.

It is this versatility that attracted McCall as he looks to boost his depleted squad for the season ahead, following the retirement of Stephen Craigan and the departure of Tim Clancy and Steve Jennings.

The signing is particularly important ahead of the ahead of the Champions League clash against Greek giants Panathinaikos on Tuesday with injury worries over defenders Shaun Hutchinson, Steven Saunders and Jonathan Page.

Speaking to MFC TV Ramsden said: “It seems as if I have been here for a while already.

“I went to Portugal with all the lads at the start of the month and that was really good in terms of getting to know everyone as you’re spending 24-hours a day with them all.

“Everyone is making me feel very welcome and it’s nice to get everything sorted. I am really looking forward to the challenge ahead.”
