Kirsty joins Team GB

BOTHWELL badminton player Kirsty Gilmour has been awarded a place on the Team GB Ambition Programme as she eyes a place at Rio 2016.

Kirsty (18) won her first senior Scottish National women’s singles title this year having previously represented Scotland at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi.

She will be among 130 athletes and 56 coaches from all summer and winter sports to join the programme, following in the footsteps of Team GB squad members Imogen Bankier and Chris Adcock, who were part of the 2008 programme.

Kirsty, who already has nine international caps and is ranked number 89 in the world, will have a special inside experience of the London 2012 Games.

Before the Games begin she will visit the preparation camp in Loughborough and meet squad members Adcock, Bankier, Susan Egelstaff and Rajiv Ouseph before sampling the Olympic atmosphere and enjoying a wrap-up day where athletes can share their experiences.

BADMINTONscotland’s chief executive Anne Smillie said: “This is a wonderful opportunity for Kirsty and she richly deserves it after all the success that has come her way at senior level in such a short space of time.

“She represents the future in badminton for both Scotland and Great Britain.”
