Juniors still frozen out

JUNIOR sides Thorniewood United and Bellshill Athletic were sidelined again last Saturday when they were once again beaten by the weather.

Thorniewood’s Emirates Scottish Junior Cup third round replay with Camelon at Robertson Park and Bellshill’s scheduled Central League First Division home match with Shettleston both fell victim to the weather.

It was the third week in a row that Thorniewood’s Camelon clash has been called off and the tie has been rearranged for this Saturday - weather permitting.

Once again the game will have a 1.45pm kick-off with extra-time and penalties if required. The winners will be away to Yoker Athletic in the fourth round.

Bellshill’s postponement was particularly frustrating for the club’s new managerial duo of Robert Downs and David Turnbull who were looking forward to taking charge for the first time.

Downs, a former player with Hamilton Accies, and Turnbull, who was on Motherwell’s books as a schoolboy, were appointed to replace Colin Mitchell who was axed following Athletic’s Scottish Cup defeat at Musselburgh last month.

Downs also played for Queen’s Park under-18s and Cowdenbeath as well as junior sides Arthurlie and Pollok while Turnbull’s previous clubs include senior sides Preston North End, Stranraer and Stirling Albion and junior outfits Maryhill, Petershill and Pollok.

It was while both played as strikers with Pollok that they became good friends as they enjoyed a successful spell with the Glasgow side under another former Bellshill manager, Rab Sneddon.

Their first task will be to try to steer Athletic away from the relegation zone and of the elements do relent for this weekend their first game will be an away match against fellow strugglers St Roch’s, kick-off 1.45pm.

There were no winners in last week’s Bellshill Athletic lottery and this week’s prize will be £2,000.

A bus for St Roch’s will leave The Orb at 12.45 and non-members will be welcome - for seats phone Alex Conner on 07729 378818.
