Joy for Gary as he breaks into top ten

MOTHERWELL kickboxer Gary McLeary is celebrating after his latest victory moved him into the world’s top ten.

McLeary made a successful defence of his British and Commonwealth heavyweight titles in Wishaw earlier this month and is now set to take his place among the sport’s elite.

Following his victory over Poland’s Kris Romanovski, he said: “I prepared myself well and thankfully it paid off.

“It was new territory for him as he’d never gone ten rounds before, but all credit to Romanovski as he kept with me and can now say he has.

“He is a bit lighter than me so was a little more agile and tried to use that to his advantage, but I just used my experience to claim the win.”

The fight was watched by around 2.5 million people online and that coupled with his move up the International Kickboxing Federation’s rankings has McLeary hoping for big things in the future.

He said: “Hopefully now my name is out there and people will come forward to challenge me and I will be involved in some big fights.

“I think I am a worthy opponent for anyone and the IKF moving me into the top ten in the world should ratify that.

“I will make one more defence of the British and Commonwealth belts which should be on a big pay-per-view and if all goes well then start to look towards a European title shot and really start mixing with the big boys.”
