Italian job gets Ross first win

MOTHERWELL golfer Ross Kellett enjoyed the best day of his golfing career when he won his first professional tournament in Italy last week.

The 24-year-old led from the start of the Montecchia Open, near Verona, and finished two strokes clear of Italian runner-up Niccolo Quintarelli.

Kellett collected 5,800 euros - the biggest prize of his fledgling pro career - and the result lifts him into third place in the Alps Tour Order of Merit.

It was a welcome return to form for Kellett during a gruelling schedule of six tournaments in six weeks.

He had failed to finish higher than 17th in his previous four events, but the Italian victory sets him up nicely for the last of those six events in Madrid this week.

Kellett began with a superb eight under par 63 and followed this with rounds of 70 and 68 for a 12 under total of 201.

Clutching the trophy afterwards, he said: “It’s the best day of my golfing career so far and, having moved up to third in the Order of Merit, I am now in sight of the top place.”

Kellett’s aim in his debut pro season is to finish in the top five in the Order of Merit which would put him into the European Challenge Tour next season, another step towards his goal of playing on the full European Tour.

After this week’s event in Spain the Alps Tour takes a break before the action resumes in Italy at the end of August.
