Home town debut for new pro Alex

MOTHERWELL boxer Alex Montgomery will make his professional debut in front of a home crowd next month and despite doing so aged 29 says it was best to wait until he could dedicate himself to the sport.

Super-middleweight Montgomery, who trains at Forgewood ABC, will take on Brighton’s Iain Jackson over four rounds at Ravenscraig Regional Sport Facility on Friday, March 8, on ‘The Return of the Steelmen’ card.

He said: “Ideally I’d have turned pro earlier, however I had work commitments which meant I would be working in London and Wales so couldn’t give myself to the sport as much as I wanted to.

“Now I’m employed locally, which means I can be running in the morning and in the gym every evening. I don’t feel it’s too late for me as I keep myself in good shape, plus I’m sick of hearing I could’ve done something as a professional so at least I can say I gave it a go.”

As an amateur Montgomery was Scottish champion as both a junior and senior in addition to a handful of district titles, and hopes to be kept busy after signing on with Bellshill-based Prospect Boxing.

He said: “I want to be busy and will fight anywhere, and Prospect owner Paul Graham is the best man for that job. I’ve seen how he’s kept his stable ticking over and as a hungry fighter that is what you need.

“I stopped two out the last three as an amateur so hopefully I can bring that form over to the pros and by this time next year be ready for a Scottish title.”

Meanwhile another Motherwell boxer has already enjoyed success at Ravenscraig as Newarthill ABC’s Harry Carlin won his first title at the Scottish Intermediate Junior Championships.

Taylor High pupil Harry (14), who is also a successful kickboxer, competed in the 52kg category for boxers born in 1998.

Over 3x2 minute rounds he saw off Durie’s ABC’s Richard Neilson 15-7 in the semi-final and then Dennistoun McNair ABC’s Josh Byrne 14-4 in the final.

Newarthill coach Wullie Downie said: “Harry has only been boxing for 18 months, but has been improving steadily since joining the club and picked his punches well to score with some heavy shots to the head and body throughout both contests.”

Harry is back in action today (Thursday) at Renfrewshire ABC’s home show before returning to Ravenscraig at the end of February for the Western District Youth Championships.
