Highland flop

MOTHERWELL’s batteries went flat at the Global Energy Stadium as Ross County ran out comfortable 3-0 winners on Saturday.

The visitors were without full-backs Tom Hateley and Stevie Hammell, while Kallum Higginbotham dropped to the bench as Adam Cummins, Zaine Francis-Angol and captain Keith Lasley were restored to the line-up.

Lasley had missed the previous two matches through suspension and his persistence earned his side an early corner from which they nearly scored.

Nicky Law’s delivery was flicked to the back post by Simon Ramdsen and Michael Higdon saw his effort cleared off the line by Iain Vigurs.

This would be as good as it got for ’Well as County were every bit as good as the Fir Parkers had been seven days previously against their Highland neighbours Inverness.

Darren Randolph did his utmost to keep the scoreline blank, but was eventually beaten on 34 minutes.

IVAN SPROULE robbed Francis-Angol and the ball ran for Rocco Quinn to send him clear and knock it under Randolph.

Sam Morrow went close to increasing County’s lead with a deflected shot, while Shaun Hutchinson headed over from a Law free-kick as he continues to look for his second goal of the season.

Chris Humphrey wasted a golden chance to put ’Well level as he ran on to a Law punt forward, but shot tamely at Mark Brown.

At the other end Randolph needed to show rather keener reflexes to deny Sproule at point blank range from Paul Lawson’s cross.

James McFadden was sent on for Stuart Carswell to try and rescue the situation, and was presented with a opportunity from a direct free-kick, but it was blocked by Morrow.

On 70 minutes County did finally make it 2-0 as Cummins’s clearance was charged down allowing Sproule to square to RICHARD BRITTAIN and he curled home from the edge of the area.

The victory was complete two minutes from time as VIGURS was left unmarked in the area and gratefully accepted the space to finish from Steffen Wohlfarth’s cross.

The defeat left ’Well in third place in the SPL as Inverness once again regained second spot by virtue of beating Hearts.
