Gordon living the dream at Fir Park
MOTHERWELL'S head of youth development Gordon Young says that managing the first team is the greatest honour of his career so far, even if it was for only one game.
Young was in charge for the Hearts game after the sacking of manager Jim Gannon, despite the presence of new interim manager Craig Brown in the dugout.
It was a chance to fulfil a dream for the lifelong 'Well fan. Despite the 1-0 defeat Young was keen to point out the positives and said:
"Having supported Motherwell all my days, it was a privilege for me and I thank the players for giving me the massive support they did.
"The fans as well were appreciative of the fact that it was people with the heart and soul of the club in mind who were in charge. I felt myself trying to blow the ball over the line at times!"
Young has had a smooth progression to his current role, but he revealed: "It was never my design to have a coaching role. I played for 20 years at senior and junior levels, so having being involved in football for so long it seems to have been a natural step.
"I got my opportunity through helping out Peter Millar, a former player here, and have progressed through the SFA's coach education system. I have seized the opportunity for more and more responsibility, having been in the right place at the right time."
Young has become the new custodian of the conveyor belt of youth players at Motherwell, and being in charge of a group of players whom he has helped to develop and shape into first team stars added an extra sense of pride for him.
The arrival of Craig Brown and Archie Knox seems to have boosted everyone at Fir Park and continuity is the key for Young.
He said: "Craig and Archie have lifted spirits and stabilised the club. Hopefully they can reap the benefits of it on the park in terms of results."
