Downie aims to emulate Sharoudi in Razak test
NEWARTHILL boxer John Downie is stepping up a weight division as he continues his fledgling professional career in Scoutstoun on Saturday, November 27.
Unbeaten Downie fought his first two fights at super-featherweight but will be stepping into the ring at lightweight for his bout with Birmingham journeyman Sid Razak.
Downie said: "I was strugglng to make the weight so I have decided that it will be better fighting at a higher weight from now on and feel much fitter and stronger."
Despite only winning four of his 58 fights, Razak has only been stopped three times so Downie is expecting a long six rounds.
He said: "Razak is tough guy and he just keeps going, but I am happy with my conditioning that I'll be able to keep on him for as long as the fight lasts."
Razak's latest defeat came against Forgewood's Steven Sharoudi who made his professional debut in Glasgow on Monday, November 15.
The light-welterweight bout ended 60-54 in favour of Sharoudi who had to recover from glandular fever in the lead up to the fight.
Sharoudi said: "Happily things went really well and I felt very comfortable in there.
"I was bigger than my opponent and had a longer reach but Razak's defence is exceptional and he stood up to some very hard shots so it was just important to pick up the rounds."
