Kris Hughes lands on Carl Frampton but would ultimately lose the fight

BELLSHILL boxer Kris Hughes failed in his bid to become Commonwealth super bantamweight champion after being knocked out by champion Carl Frampton on Saturday.

The bout at the York Hall in London was Hughes’s second attempt at lifting the title, but a crushing right hand in the seventh round by the Northern Irishman ended the contest.

Hughes’s manager, Paul Graham, said: “Kris never quite got into the fight and I’m not sure why.

“I might have slightly underestimated Frampton, though I don’t think Kris did.

“I felt his record was maybe a little padded, but he’s certainly the real deal and that knockout punch would have felled a heavyweight.

“Ironically, he came out in the seventh and it looked like it was going to be his best round only to get caught, but there is no disgrace and Frampton’s manager, Barry McGuigan, praised Kris for being a tough opponent.”

Meanwhile, Graham has teamed up with Chris Gilmour to promote the first Prospect Boxing show of the year at Wishaw Sports Centre on Friday, February 24.

The seven-bout card will feature undefeated Motherwell duo, light middleweight Steven Banks and flyweight Iain Butcher, taking on the experienced Duncan Cottier and Andy Roberts respectively
