TOP cyclist James McCallum proved a popular visitor to Dalziel High School in Motherwell recently when he gave pupils a motivational talk as part of the Champions in Schools programme.

The role-model initiative places Scotland’s top international athletes in the classroom to help pupils set and achieve personal ambitions, pursue a healthy and active lifestyle, appreciate the value of hard work and adopt a positive, winning attitude.

James, from Uddingston, is a Scottish racing cyclist who represented Scotland in the team pursuit, points and scratch races at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester and again in 2006 in Melbourne in the scratch, points and road races, winning a bronze medal in the scratch race.

James has delivered inspirational workshops, guiding, advising and motivating pupils to become winners who fulfil their potential and who believe that what is important is not how good they are now, but how good they want to become.

The programme has given young people the opportunity to interact with top sporting role models and learn about the importance of adopting a positive attitude to life through goal setting as well as a healthy attitude to nutrition and exercise.
