Bellshill draw a blank but still beat the drop

THE largest crowd of the season at Fullarton Park on Monday night watched Bellshill and St Anthony’s ‘fight’ out a goalless draw which saved both sides from relegation.

Both sides took to the field needing one point to be sure of beating the drop from the Central League First Division with Bellshill looking to avoid relegation for a third successive season in, potentially, their last ever game.

Given the circumstances it was hardly surprising that when Bellshill kicked off their opponents lined up with 10 men strung across the field 30 yards from their goal with lone ‘striker’ Dickson just in front of them.

Bellshill were content to knock the ball across the field without making any real attempt to get behind the Ants defence and the visitors were happy to thump the ball out of play whenever it came their way.

At the final whistle both sides warmly congratulated each other on avoiding relegation.

Meanwhile Thorniewood United are still waiting for a date to be confirmed for their final league match.

The Viewpark side’s only outstanding fixture is against Scottish Cup finalists Shotts Bon Accord at Robertson Park, one of nine Super League First Divison fixtures outstanding for Shotts.

All free dates up to the final on May 27 have been filled with other Shotts games, meaning Thorniewood will have to wait until the end of the month, or possibly June, before they can complete their season.

For a full report on Monday’s match see May 16 edition of the Motherwell Times or Bellshill Speaker.
