MOTHERWELL defender Adam Cummins last week pledged himself to the club until 2015 and says young players need to gain experience before moving on.

The 19-year-old signed his new deal as Aberdeen starlet Ryan Fraser, a year younger, rejected the offer of a new contract despite playing just 21 first team games.

He said: “My future is at Motherwell for the next couple of years and if I keep doing what I’m doing then hopefully I can secure my place.

“As a young kid it’s important to be playing in the first team, whether it be in the SPL or in England, to get experience and at the moment I have a good chance of being selected.”

Cummins is perhaps wiser than some of his SPL contemporaries, having been part of the Everton set-up before arriving at Fir Park last year.

He said: “Here you are going to get the opportunity and then it is up to yourself to take it, you only have to look at the number of people who have come up here and furthered their careers.”

Liverpool-born Cummins has further pledged himself to Motherwell’s future by joining the ‘Well Society which seeks to take over the running of the club.

He said: “I think it is good for the players to be giving something back.

“I spoke with the chief executive Leeann Dempster about it and they seem to have a good thing going.”

Cummins made his 17th start of the season on Saturday as ’Well beat Ross County by the odd goal in five to secure just their second home win of the season.

He said: “Victory was certainly an excellent way to celebrate signing a new deal, there have been a lot of questions about our home form, but we had a good draw against Hearts and then it was great to follow that up with three points on Saturday.”

’Well travel to Easter Road on Saturday eager to put a nightmare 4-0 defeat to Hibs at Fir Park in October behind them.

Cummins said: “We didn’t have the best performance against Hibs, so we’ll be looking to put that right. Our away form is good at the moment so hopefully we can keep that rolling and claim the three points.”
