RAVENSCRAIG Regional Sports Facility played host to Great Britain’s men’s handball team’s 2016 Euro Championship Qualifier against Italy.
Over 450 spectators watched the exciting contest as the young GB side went down 47 goals to 23.
Pupils from Calder Primary in Motherwell led the teams out before the national anthems were played and afterwards there was a mini-pitch invasion by the children getting autographs from the GB players.
Stephen Neilson, chairman of Scottish Handball Association, said: “It was a disappointing result but the team is in transition following the London 2012 Olympics and there are a lot of new younger players in the team.
“Since the UK Sport funding cut the players have to pay their own way and this meant that 10 of the London 2012 Olympic squad were missing as they’re still with their clubs abroad.
“There is a lot of preparation work required for a match of this level. We would not have been able to put the match on without the support of North Lanarkshire Leisure and this was crucial in bringing the match to Scotland.”
