GOLFERS George Robertson and Jim McCluskey represented Scotland at a prestigious matchplay championship in Portugal.

Robertson, an 11-handicapper from Motherwell, and McCluskey, from Newarthill, who plays off 13, qualified for the HowDidIDo event on the Algarve after winning the Scottish heat at Cardrona, Peebles.

But their brave bid to win the senior pairs title ended when they lost their semi-final on the last green.

The pair who beat them, David Liptrott and Jack Crompton, from Lancashire, went on to win the final while the Lanarkshire lads earned a draw in the third/fourth place play-off.

Robertson and McCluskey are members of Carnwath Golf Club. They enjoyed a seven-day expenses-paid trip to Vilamoura, playing five rounds on the renowned golf courses there.

The competition involved 32 golfers aged 50 and above from across the UK taking part in four categories.

HowDidIDo operates an online results services and holds the handicaps, results and scores of more than 1.30 million UK golf club members.

Robertson said: “It was a fantastic trip with five-star treatment throughout and a gala dinner on the last night to round it off.”
