The rain may have been pouring, but Motherwell’s first victory of 2015 left Fir Park feeling much sunnier on Saturday.

There was feeling right from the off that this was a more determined ’Well side, as if the shock of falling to the bottom of the league had finally awoken them from their season-long slumber.

Scott McDonald almost made an instant impact, but Conor Grant’s cross was just too high and the former Australian international couldn’t keep his header down.

Another Grant cross was then miscontrolled by Edward Ofere, but Stephen Pearson volleyed over.

McDonald had a great chance as Stephen McManus’s long ball was misjudged by Ross Draper, but from just a few yards out again couldn’t find the target.

Inverness aren’t third in the league by accident and were always a threat, Graeme Shinnie found Greg Tansey in acres of space at the edge of the box, but he fired over.

A minute from the break ’Well had George Long to thank for keeping them level as he dived at the feet of Danny Williams after Josh Law failed to deal with Ofere’s flick-on.

Three minutes into the second half ’Well took the lead as LOUIS LAING ghosted in to bullet a Grant cross beyond Ryan Esson.

The visitors were stunned, but going behind seemed to motivate them and Williams crashed a 30-yard drive off the bar and then Ofere headed against the inside of the post.

On 76 minutes they equalised as OFERE rose highest to nod in a Shinnie cross.

In previous weeks the home side might have crumbled, but they were made of stronger stuff and roared back at their guests.

Five minutes from time Craig Moore fluffed his shot from Law’s cutback, the ball ran kindly for John Sutton, but Draper managed to put the ball behind.

Grant’s corner found its way to LIONEL AINSWORTH at the far edge of the box and with the aid of perhaps two deflections his low drive fizzed past Esson.

The game ended on something of a sour note for the home side as Simon Ramsden was shown a second yellow card on 88 minutes.

However the ten men were able to see the game out and secure the win.
