Motherwell grabbed their first victory since the opening day of the season at Dingwall on Saturday to finally end a run of four defeats.

Iain Vigurs used the international break to regain fitness and come back to haunt his old club , while John Sutton got off the mark for the season as new Ross County boss Jim McIntyre failed to make an immediate turnaround of their fortunes.

Stevie Hammell remained out, but Stuart McCall recalled Vigurs, Simon Ramsden and Lee Erwin in place of Lionel Ainsworth, Zaine Francis-Angol and Henrik Ojamaa from the side who lost to St Johnstone a fortnight before.

The visitors created the first chance of the game as Sutton scrapped to win the ball at the edge of the County box, but curled his effort wide.

County then began to dominate the first half with Jake Jervis slipping the ball to Michael Gardyne who forced Dan Twardzik to get down sharply at his post.

Jackson Irvine’s crunching tackle on Paul Lawson then set Joe Cardle free, but he elected to traverse the entire width of the area and Craig Reid got in position to deflect his shot wide.

Jervis then set up Gardyne again but drifting in on the blind side the on-loan Dundee United striker headed wide and just missed the target with a shot from the edge of the area.

It wasn’t all one way traffic as Graham Carey was forced to clear off the line to deny Erwin’s header.

Four minutes into the second half Jordi Balk made a clumsy challenge on Erwin 25 yards out and VIGURS stepped up to sweep the ball into the net.

On 54 minutes ’Well doubled their advantage as Darren Barr headed a Dan Twardzik clearance straight into the path of SUTTON who lashed the ball over the head of Antonio Reguero from 30 yards.

Twelve minutes from time County threw themselves a lifeline as Carey got to the byeline and poked the ball across the face of goal for LIAM BOYCE to slide it in.

Carey himself almost got on the scoresheet as his mishit free kick nearly flew into the top corner, but Twardzik put it over the top and ’Well were able to hang on for the three points.
