Thorniewood booked a Euroscot Engineering Central League Cup quarter-final tie at home to St Roch’s after a 2-0 third round win at Maryhill on Monday night.
A goal in each half gave the Viewpark side a deserved victory as they bounced back from the disappointment of relegation.
Thorniewood striker Chris Lennon twice came close before the visitors took a 27th minute when STEFAN LAW did well in a crowded box before sending a well placed shot in off the foot of the post.
Maryhill responded with a shot wide from Max Asante before the half ended with a decent strike from Law after the youngster had shown great tenacity to manufacture the chance.
Thorniewood went two up in the 47th minute when an O’Hara free-kick was guided home from six yards by the alert LENNON.
The Viewpark side should have made it three moments later when Lennon and O’Hara combined on the left to set up Brian Johnston but the veteran’s header from four yards flew inches wide.
Well on top, ’Wood continued to press with substitute Craig Forbes volleying into the arms of the home ’keeper and O’Hara seeing a chip go agonisingly wide of the far post.
Maryhill’s best chance of the match arrived in the 77th minute when they broke clear from a Thorniewood throw-in but ’keeper Fitzpatrick made an important stop with his feet.
Thorniewood are in action again tonight (Wednesday) when they travel to Yoker for a Super League First Division match and are at home to Irvine Vics on Saturday.
