Recovering ’Well to complete win

Motherwell came from behind as a blistering second half display put Ross County to the sword at Fir Park on Saturday.

A double from John Sutton and a late Bob McHugh header cancelled out a first half Stephen McManus own goal.

Zaine Francis-Angol is becoming a first team regular this season, but has yet to open his account.

However, he came close as Henri Anier set up him up at the edge of the box, but Francis-Angol’s chip over Mark Brown was a little wayward.

Sutton had a great chance to break the deadlock from Carswell’s cutback, but Brown denied his old club.

Oh the half hour mark and much against the run of play County took the lead as Ben Gordon’s low cross from the left was met by Melvin de Leeuw.

His shot didn’t look to be going in, but took a massive deflection off McMANUS to completely wrong foot Lee Hollis.

James McFadden free-kicks set up Sutton and Simon Ramsden, but neither could seriously trouble Brown.

Two minutes from the break the visitors spurned a glorious chance to double their advantage as de Leeuw picked out the onrushing Richard Brittain perfectly at the edge of the box, but he fired over.

At half-time Lionel Ainsworth replaced McFadden and he would play a key role in ’Well’s equaliser on 53 minutes.

SUTTON had a free-kick tipped wide by Brown and from the resultant Ainsworth corner the striker headed in.

Hollis did well to prevent Stuart Kettlewell allowing the Highlanders to regain the lead and in 67 minutes the balance of the game switched entirely.

Anier played a lovely hooked through ball and SUTTON ran on to smash it into the net.

It would be Anier’s final act of the match as he was replaced by McHugh, fresh from his goal against Livingston in the League Cup.

On 77 minutes he found himself on the scoresheet as Ramsden sent a raking diagonal cross from the right to the back post and McHugh came steaming in to bullet the ball beyond Brown.

Sutton came within inches of a hat-trick as his header from Stevie Hammell’s cross flicked the side netting.
