Deadly duo lead ’Well comeback

Ten-man Motherwell made a successful BT Sport debut on Saturday coming from behind to beat Kilmarnock in the evening kick-off.

The action got underway at 5.30pm due to the demands of the television company, and the home side were clearly desperate to get going.

With just 14 seconds on the clock a long ball by Shaun Hutchinson sent Iain Vigurs in behind the Killie defence, but he knocked the ball wide.

Henri Anier looked to have a great chance to put the Fir Parkers ahead as he got away from Jackson Irvine, but as he pulled the trigger the defender got back with a brilliant challenge.

The deadlock was broken on 17 minutes as Killie took the lead through STEPHEN McMANUS heading a Barry Nicholson free kick from the left into his own net. However, parity was restored three minutes later as Keith Lasley played a beautiful reverse pass to ANIER who slotted the ball through Craig Samson’s legs.

Lee Hollis denied Nicholson and Samson kept out Vigurs and John Sutton as it looked like the sides would go into the break all square.

However, right on half-time an appalling error by Irvine ensured this would not be the case as he took a fresh air swipe at a Simon Ramsden cross and a grateful SUTTON slid the ball in at the back post.

Two minutes after the restart Sutton was unlucky not to make it 3-1 as his diving header couldn’t find a way past the large frame of Samson from point blank range.

At the other end Kris Boyd met Sean Clohessy’s cross on the angled volley, it beat Hollis but Hutchinson was present to knock the ball over.

Ramseden’s complaints that he had been fouled in the box by William Gros went on too long for referee Craig Charleston’s liking and he ended up in the book. Gros himself then nearly took advantage as Hutchinson gave the ball away on the edge of the box, but the Reunionese forward’s shot was weak.

Lionel Ainsworth arrived at ’Well on loan from Rotherham United on Thursday and was given a late run out, but the match ended on a sour note as three minutes from time Ramsden received a second yellow for a rash challenge on Rabiu Ibrahim.
