BELLSHILL pool player Scott Gillespie won the Rileys Scottish singles championship at Stirling and a £1,000 prize.

He was one of several Bellshill players to qualify for the final of the inter-club 8-ball event, joined by George Fagan, Jamie Burnett, Paul McCutcheon, Thomas McWhirter, Robert Douglas, John Slavin and Michael Collomb.

The event had been due to be held in Bellshil last month, but was moved to Stirling when Rileys shut down its club in Thorn Road.

George Fagan, who also helped organise the event, said: “We’d like to thank the management of the Stirling club for stepping in to save the day.

“It was fitting a Bellshill lad won it after our club was closed down without prior warning. That was a gleam of light after the loss of our very popular club.

“We will continue to run events in other Rileys clubs and, given the response from this event, the future looks bright for our remaining clubs.”
