A GIRLS’ under-14 team from Dalziel High School has finished in a creditable fifth place in a national football competition.

The girls were among just six teams who made it all the way through to the finals of the Lloyds TSB Scotland U14 Girls Sevens from an initial entry of 60 schools back in September.

It was the second year running that Dalziel have qualified from the regional heats for the national finals which were played at the Toryglen regional football centre in Glasgow.

Spectators were treated to a high standard of football on the day with the six teams split across two groups of three. The group winners, runners-up and 3rd placed teams then played against each other to determine the final standings.

Dalziel eventually finished 5th overall after conquering Montrose Academy 2-1 in their play-off match.

Giffnock’s St Ninian’s High School were crowned champions after a comprehensive 5-1 victory in the final over Mintlaw Academy from Aberdeenshire, while Edinburgh’s Mary Erskine School finished third having overcome Auchinleck Academy.
