The Bellshill Barbarians rugby team, based at Bellshill Academy, rounded off a great season in style by lifting the Lanarkshire Schools Cup.

The competition was a great opportunity for the pupils to showcase their talents and with the Barbarians entering the tournament with an unbeaten record, confidence amongst the boys was high.

This was a key contributor to their success and was illustrated with a brilliant victory against Uddingston Grammar by a margin of five tries to one.

The boys’ determination and resilience in the following game against Whitburn highlighted the spirit of the team as they put three tries on the board to nil conceded to book their place in the final.

They were up against Coatbridge High, formidable opponents with a great run of results, and the game was very physical with big tackles by both teams followed by some great phases of play.

However it was Bellshill who came out on top with a 2-1 victory to win the competition.

Following that success Bellshill Academy’s rugby team entered another tournament against schools from across North Lanarkshire and once more came out on top with wins over Coatbridge High (7-0), Dalziel High (5-1) and Airdrie Academy (3-0).
