Motherwell and Wishaw MP Frank Roy was delighted to meet the first young person to get a job through the ‘Our Community’ initiative.
Frank set up the programme earlier this year in association with Jobcentre Plus, Suited and Booted and the trade union Community to enable young people to gain experience in the workplace.
First to receive full-time employment as a result of his placement is 21-year-old Daniel Mullen who has been taken on at Newtown Waste Solutions in Motherwell.
Frank said: “I’m over the moon to find out Newtown Skips have taken on a youngster who maybe wouldn’t have got a job otherwise.
“The Our Community programme is going from strength to strength and it’s down to companies like Newtown Skips who have taken the chance of bringing in these young people .
“This is the perfect example of a local company who have thought they can do a wee bit more for the area’s young people and I hope Daniel will be an asset to the company.”
Daniel has been unemployed for some time and his lack of experience made it difficult to get a job, so was thrilled with opportunity to get involved with Our Community.
He said: “I didn’t have any work experience so I thought I would volunteer for the programme and it’s paid off because I have got a full-time job at the end of it.
“It’s a great job, I love working outside and getting my hands dirty, a few guys have warned me it isn’t so much fun in the winter, but I’m sure it will be fine.
“It’s just a relief to finally be out of the Jobcentre and can’t thank the guys at Newtown enough for taking me on.”
Newtown Waste Solution director Martin McLindon said: “We were delighted to get involved with the Our Community and bringing Daniel in has worked out perfectly for everyone.”
