A MOTHERWELL woman was killed as tragedy unfolded in the town centre on Monday.

Elizabeth McGuinness (63) died after being hit by an out of control car on Muir Street around 10.40am.

Onlookers watched in horror as the Vauxhall Insignia headed in the wrong direction of the one-way street, ploughing into parked cars.

It then crashed into the front of the Scoffs coffee shop before continuing down the pavement and hitting Elizabeth and friend Barbara McCready (64).

Sadly, Elizabeth, of Glen Tower, died at the scene. Barbara was taken to Wishaw General, where her condition was described as ‘serious’ as we went to press.

The driver - Brian Docherty (44) - who is believed to have fallen ill at the wheel, was also taken to Wishaw General but has since been released.
