More than 1,000 people have signed a petitioncollected by local residents in support of a plan to build a new Asda store in Viewpark.
The firm has applied to North Lanarkshire Council for planning permission to construct the store on land at Laburnum Road and Old Edinburgh Road.
But council officials have recommended that the application should be turned down because of the adverse effect it could have on Bellshill town centre.
Members of the planning and transportation committee will carry out a site visit later this month before making their decision.
But a sizeable number of residents insist the store should be given the go-ahead.
One, Catherine Wilson said: “I cannot understand why anybody would object to any large supermarket being built here. Bellshill has a choice of supermakets within walking distance of each other. We deserve the same.”
