The funeral took place today of a popular pensioner described as one of the last “characters” in Bothwell.
With his pipe and bunnet, diminutive Tommy Menzies was a familiar figure in the village.
For many years he dressed up as Santa Claus, much to the amusement of shoppers and children in Main Street.
Tommy, formerly of Fallside Road, lived latterly in sheltered housing in Fife Crescent. He was in his late 80s and his funeral was held at Bothwell Parish Church.
One villager said: “Until recently Tommy still liked to get out to enjoy a quiet pint at Bothwell Bridge Hotel. He was one of the last characters in the village.”
