TRADING Standards officers have discovered that some part worn tyres fitted in North Lanarkshire have been deemed to be illegal for one reason or another following an investigation.
Trading Standards officers visited a number of tyre dealers as part of operations during November and found none that completely complied with safety regulations.
The operation was prompted by a national increase in the number of serious accidents involving cars fitted with faulty tyres and by the numbers of drivers buying part worn tyres.
The investigation saw undercover officers take single wheel rims into 12 separate tyre dealers and asked them to fit the rim with an inexpensive used tyre.
An examination of the tyres by a motor engineering expert found that two of the tyres had undergone a substandard, temporary repair which was not up to British Standard, and one that was already badly damaged, potentially making them unsafe to be used on the road.
