A teenager suffered a head injury following a serious assault in Motherwell town centre yesterday (Tuesday).

Around 5.30pm a young man and young woman got off a bus at Muir Street bus stop, near Motherwell Station, with the male then being assaulted by two men.

The 18 year-old victim was taken to Wishaw General Hospital where he was treated for a head injury, and subsequently released.

The two suspects made off towards Lantana Grove.

The first suspect is described as white, around 18 years of age, and 5ft 5in in height. He had dark brown hair and was wearing a grey tracksuit.

The second is white, between 18-19 years of age and around 5ft 7in in height. He was wearing a dark grey coloured Adidas tracksuit and dark coloured trainers.

Enquiries so far have revealed that the two suspects were on the bus and there was an altercation between the two suspects and the victim prior to them getting off the bus.

Officers are in the process of gathering and reviewing CCTV images.

Detective Inspector John Lamb said: “It would have been busy at this time of day and I am appealing to anyone who was on the bus or at the bus stop to get in touch with us.

“The motive for this attack is unclear, we know that both parties were involved in an altercation on the bus and this seemed to continue when they got off the bus and I am keen to speak to anyone who was on the bus as they may be able to provide information which could prove significant in our investigation.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact Motherwell police office on 01698 483000 or the police non-emergency number, 101.
