A LEADING supermarket has announced plans to open up shop in Motherwell, creating up to 300 jobs and providing a much-needed boost to the local economy.

Sainsbury’s new superstore, on the former bus depot site on Hamilton Road, would be its first in North Lanarkshire, though it has one in Hamilton.

The company intends to build a 60,000 sq ft store with around 500 parking spaces and has submitted a planning application to North Lanarkshire Council.

The development would create up to 300 full and part-time jobs, representing a significant employment boost for Motherwell and the wider area.

The chosen site has lain empty for many years since the bus depot closed and was demolished.

Planning permission was granted in June 2007 for 141 apartments and eight townhouses on part of the ground and flats are currently being marketed.

Ladywell Community Council has opposed large scale re-development of the site and was due to discuss the Sainsbury’s application as we went to press.
