A MAN who grants wishes for children battling life-limiting conditions has had 20 years of volunteering recognised with an MBE.

Les Hoey works tirelessly to put smiles on the faces of children receiving treatment at Yorkhill Hospital in Glasgow and The Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh.

Working full-time at the Network Rail base in Motherwell, Les dedicates his spare time to organising celebrity meet and greets, days out and a huge Christmas party at Fir Park Stadium for sick children.

The Wishaw man started his impressive work when daughter Shelley battled leukaemia.

Thankfully Shelley, now 32, recovered, but family man Les - who has another daughter Donna and son Darren, as well as grandchildren Jay, Millie and Ollie - continued his quest.

He said: “I don’t know when I will be getting the award yet, all I know is that I will be given five weeks’ notice. I’m dedicating it to all ‘my’ children who have passed away.”
