Stuart Watson from Motherwell was named the Young Retail Volunteer of the Year Award from British Heart Foundation (BHF) Scotland.
Stuart received the award at the BHF Scotland Supporter Conference during Volunteers’ Week, for the hard work and dedication he has demonstrated in the Motherwell shop on Brandon Parade East for the last two years.
He said: “I am thrilled to have received the Volunteer of the Year award from BHF Scotland, I knew beforehand I was getting it, but was told to keep it a secret so I was delighted when I could finally share the news with everyone.
“I first started through a college placement before becoming a full-time volunteer and it has been a really good experience. I love coming in and volunteering, I get to work with some fantastic people and have made some great friends.
“Everyone is so supportive, especially the shop manager Margaret Rankin. I would encourage anyone to volunteer for BHF Scotland as it is such a rewarding experience and you get to meet the most fantastic and inspiring people.”
Coronary heart disease is still Scotland’s single biggest killer and volunteering with BHF Scotland for just half a day a month could fund a scientist to carry out life saving research for a whole hour.
Cheryl Hanley, BHF Scotland’s local shops Area Manager, said: “I’m delighted to see Stuart’s work in the Motherwell shop recognised in this way.
“We wouldn’t be able to continue our life saving research without Stuart and the thousands of others like him across Scotland.”
