A Viewpark man has snapped up the top prize in an annual competition for amateur photographers run by South Lanarkshire Council.

Steven McAllister was named overall winner of the South Lanarkshire Annual Photographic Competition, now in its tenth successful year.

The winners were announced at a special preview evening at Chatelherault Country Park Visitor Centre to mark the opening of an exhibition featuring the best of the entries.

Organised by South Lanarkshire Leisure & Culture, the competition is open to all residents and visitors to South Lanarkshire and entries in this year’s competition have come in from all around the area.

The competition has junior and adult sections with six entry categories within each section and all images entered into the competition must have been taken in South Lanarkshire within the last five years.

The 2014 awards were presented by Councillor Hamish Stewart, chairman of South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture.

He said: “The photographic competition has gone from strength to strength over the years and I am delighted to see so many entries again this year from locals and visitors alike.

“It was very difficult indeed to choose winners from such an excellent array of entries.

“I would urge visitors to come along and see the full exhibition of all this year’s entries.

“Thanks must go to all who have helped make this such a successful and growing annual event.”

Steven took first place in the adult section and the prize for overall competition winner with his stunning shot ‘Road to a Landscape’ which he enterted in the Scenes: Rural/Landscapes category.

As well as receiving his award certificate, Steven was also presented with an engraved glass trophy by Councillor Stewart.

Overall junior winner, with her entry ‘Calder Water’ was 11-year-old Sarah Hoggan from Glassford.

Among the other winners was Motherwell Photographic Society member Margaret Dewar whose entry ‘Gosling’ took top prie in the nature section.

The photographic exhibition is now open to the public in the Cadzow Gallery, Chatelherault Country Park, Ferniegair, by Hamilton, during Visitor Centre opening hours until Sunday, March 15.
